What is UV DTF printing?

UV DTF is a transfer-printing process developed for many smooth, clean and non-porous hard surfaces. Colour, white ink and clear varnish are UV cured onto specialist film, then combined with an adhesive layer and carrier film.

The finished transfer is positioned on the product, rubbed down and peeled without heat. Because the individual printed elements transfer together, UV DTF can reproduce detailed logos, small lettering and multi-colour artwork without manually weeding separate vinyl pieces.

Although customers often call them “UV DTF stickers,” they are applied as transfers: the printed design remains on the product while the carrier film is removed.

Often suitable after testing

  • Smooth glass
  • Compatible ceramic
  • Rigid acrylic
  • Suitable coated metal
  • Smooth hard plastic
  • Rigid packaging
  • Selected sealed surfaces
  • Clean promotional products

Usually unsuitable or uncertain

  • Fabric and garments
  • Silicone and rubber
  • Heavily textured products
  • Dirty or oily surfaces
  • Very tight curves and edges
  • Low-energy plastics
  • Unsealed porous materials
  • Direct food-contact areas

Compatibility warning: two products that look alike can use different coatings or plastics. A successful test on one blank does not prove that every similar product will behave identically.

How to apply UV DTF transfers

1

Clean the surface

Remove grease, dust and moisture without leaving residue, then let the item dry.

2

Prepare the transfer

Rub firmly over the design so every printed element is held by the carrier.

3

Position and apply

Align carefully, lower from one side and rub across the design to avoid trapped air.

4

Peel the carrier

Remove it slowly while checking that the complete design remains on the product.

Artwork requirements

  • Correct final print dimensions
  • 300 DPI where possible
  • Transparent PNG background
  • PDF or Adobe Illustrator file
  • Sharp, clean design edges
  • Readable small lettering
  • No unwanted background pixels
  • No blurry screenshots

Application tips

Position carefully because lifting and repositioning can damage the adhesive or design. Avoid applying across seams, raised textures, tight edges and areas that will receive repeated abrasion.

For cylindrical items, work gradually from the centre or one side while maintaining firm contact and minimising trapped air.

04

Produce sponsor logos, team marks and event graphics for suitable hard items.

05

Online sellers

Create product ranges for websites, marketplaces and social-commerce shops.

06

Promotional suppliers

Add full-colour branding to compatible products for campaigns and business events.

Care and water exposure

UV DTF transfers can tolerate normal handling and limited water exposure on compatible surfaces, but performance varies with the product, application and care.

For decorated drinkware, hand washing is the cautious recommendation. Avoid soaking and abrasive scrubbing. Do not make blanket “waterproof,” outdoor-life or scratch-proof claims without testing the exact finished item.

Food, dishwasher & microwave use

Do not apply transfers to rims or direct food-contact areas. Keep designs away from places likely to touch the mouth or food.

Do not claim dishwasher or microwave suitability unless the exact decorated product has been independently tested for the intended use.

UV DTF printing FAQs

What is UV DTF printing used for?

UV DTF is used to add detailed artwork to many compatible hard surfaces, including selected cups, bottles, containers, packaging, signs and promotional products.

Does UV DTF require a heat press?

No. UV DTF uses pressure-sensitive adhesive and carrier films, so no heat press is required for application.

Is UV DTF the same as a normal sticker?

It is commonly described as a sticker, but it is applied as a transfer. The printed design remains on the item while the carrier film is removed.

Is UV DTF permanently adhesive?

UV DTF can form a strong bond to compatible surfaces, but adhesion depends on the substrate, coating, cleaning, application and use. Test the exact product rather than relying on a universal permanence claim.

Are UV DTF transfers waterproof and scratch-resistant?

They can tolerate normal handling and limited water exposure on suitable products, but performance varies. Hand wash drinkware and test the finished product before making waterproof, outdoor-life or scratch-resistance claims.

Can UV DTF be applied to fabric or silicone?

UV DTF is not intended for fabric. Silicone and rubber are generally unsuitable because adhesion can be unreliable.

Do you offer trade or quantity ordering?

DTFX supplies businesses, creators and trade decorators. Check the UV DTF ordering page for current sizes, quantities and pricing.

How quickly are UV DTF orders dispatched?
